The Raddy [userpic]

I was in Japantown with my darling friend freakbythebay the other day, and I kept pointing out anime & manga series to her and saying "YOU NEED TO WATCH/READ THIS." After a while I'd named too many things, so she asked me to make a list.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Wonderful slice of life movie with a sci-fi slant. I love how realistic the teenage characters are.

Summer Wars

Really fun movie with fantastic animation. Won a lot of awards. Same director as "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time."

5 Centimeters Per Second

I'm sharing an AMV for this one because it's GORGEOUS. This movie has amazing scenery porn. It's the story of a boy who lost a girl, told in three parts. Be warned, it's kind of a downer, but totally worth watching because it's so beautiful.

Dennou Coil

Imagine if Studio Ghibli made a series about a group of kids who work as "investigators" (and often hackers) in an online world that's visible only through virtual reality glasses...basically, they can interact with the real world AND the virtual world at the same time. Yes, it's as awesome as it sounds. I couldn't find a sufficient trailer, so you get an adorable clip with the Mojos (digital pets of a sort).

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I'm trying to figure out how to describe this series without totally spoiling it. I can't even show you a TRAILER, for god's sake. So...let's just say it starts off as a slice of life high school anime and turns into something TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AND AMAZING, without dropping the slice of life aspect.

Note #1 - don't judge it by the first episode...the "fan video" episode that parodies anime in general. It appears out-of-order in the chronological timeline, and the REAL "first episode" is the second episode where you meet the characters.

Note #2 - season 2 consists of episodes that would be interspersed with season 1 episodes chronologically. It also contains 8 consecutive episodes that will DRIVE YOU INSANE WITH ANGER, but the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya makes up for it, I promise.

Bah, I can't find a decent trailer. The opening song will have to do. This is about a boy who goes to college to study agriculture, and has kept a secret all his life: he can see microbes with the naked eye. Shenanigans, adorable microbes, and disgusting fermented foods ensue.

(Fanmade trailer for the win!)

If you've never seen Blood: The Last Vampire, you should watch that first. This series is a follow-up of sorts, with a different director. It's 4 seasons long and has great characters and an awesome story. (VAMPIRE SLAYING, BABY.)

(Oh my god this is the best anime trailer of all time. OF ALL TIME!)

It's set in the early '30s, involves immortality, and is hilarious and incredibly violent at the same time. Also, you should be prepared to be confused as hell. YAY! :D

(It's the whole episode! You can turn on subtitles!)

I'm not even going to pretend I know what this is about. I just know I watched the first episode and loved it. MOTORCYCLE HELMET WITH KITTY EARS, PEOPLE.

Great series by Naoki Urasawa, a fantastic mangaka. Tells the story of a surgeon who saves the life of a little boy named Johan...who grows up to be a serial killer. The surgeon takes it upon himself to hunt down Johan and "fix his mistake." It was adapted into an anime, too.

Maison Ikkoku

Classic romantic comedy by Rumiko Takahashi. I think it's one of her best, and definitely her least gimmicky series. It's about a group of absolutely ridiculous people who live in a boarding house in Tokyo in the '80s. The focus is on Godai, a student who has the hots for their new (and recently widowed) house manager. Apparently there's quite a bit of character development where Godai is concerned, but I haven't read far enough yet. It's a VERY fun read, and I've seen an episode of the anime adaptation, and I loved that too.

I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two of the series I mentioned, but I think this list should keep you busy for a while, Jax. :3

hanna is not a boy's name ~ grin

I read a bit of Lum back in high school...I remember it being ridonkulous and very fun, and marveling over how much Takahashi's art has changed since then. You hold up Lum next to Inuyasha and it's like...whoooah. O_O
